Leupold Vari-X III – Precision Hunting Optics with Click Adjustments (1973–2004)
Overview & Design
Introduced in 1979, the Leupold Vari-X III represented a major leap forward in riflescope design. It replaced the internally upgraded but externally identical Vari-X IIc as Leupold’s flagship variable-power optic. With the addition of 1/4 MOA click adjustments, a fully multi-coated optical system, and improved internal construction, the Vari-X III was designed for shooters demanding repeatable accuracy, better light transmission, and rugged field performance.
Built on a one-inch aluminum tube and available in a wide range of magnifications and objective sizes, the Vari-X III line served everyone from deer hunters to long-range precision shooters. Unlike earlier models that relied on friction adjustments, the Vari-X III’s click turrets provided tactile, audible elevation and windage feedback. Its clarity and brightness, especially in low light, helped solidify Leupold’s dominance in the premium optics market throughout the 1980s and 1990s.
Available Models
The Vari-X III was offered in numerous magnification ranges and objective configurations:
- Vari-X III 1.5–5x20mm – Lightweight and ideal for dangerous game or dense brush.
- Vari-X III 1.75–6x32mm – Compact all-purpose scope for short- to mid-range rifles.
- Vari-X III 2.5–8x36mm – Versatile scope for lightweight mountain rifles.
- Vari-X III 3.5–10x40mm – One of the most popular models, balancing power and clarity.
- Vari-X III 3.5–10x50mm – Same magnification with a larger objective for low-light performance.
- Vari-X III 4.5–14x40mm AO – Adjustable Objective for longer-range precision shooting.
- Vari-X III 6.5–20x40mm AO – Designed for varmint hunters and target shooters.
- Vari-X III 8.5–25x50mm AO – Long-range dominance with large objective and fine reticle options.
Reticle choices included Duplex, Fine Duplex, Wide Duplex, Target Dot, and Boone & Crockett variants in later years. Most models were offered in both gloss and matte finishes.

Legacy
Discontinued in 2004, the Vari-X III left behind a strong legacy of optical precision and user-friendly performance. It set the standard for American-made scopes with click-adjustable turrets and crisp edge-to-edge clarity. Favored by big game hunters, long-range competitors, and law enforcement marksmen, the Vari-X III remains a top choice on the used market.
Today, many of these scopes are still in service, praised for their reliability and serviceability. Leupold’s Gold Ring warranty even extends to used Vari-X III models, further reinforcing their long-term value.
Discontinued: 2004
